Small business owners are often flat chat keeping up with the day-to-day, let alone looking at the big picture and the longer term direction of their business.
Natalie Ettingshausen, Principal of Ettingshausens Dynamic Arts, one the Shire's largest performing arts schools, reached a point where she needed help to take her business to the next level. She signed up for the SSHEDx program four years ago.
This program is run by the SSHED, Sutherland Shire Council's business accelerator, and provides business owners with a dedicated adviser to help map out their business goals and future.
'I've been teaching in the Shire now for 17 years. I'm passionate about teaching dance and performing arts, that's my training and expertise. Where I needed help was on the financial and strategic side of the business,' said Ms Ettingshausen.
'The program has taught me how to better manage and monitor the business and has added more structure to what we do. Working with my advisors, we're making the business better in so many ways,' she added.
SSHEDx is helping all types of businesses grow - retailers, IT, builders, hairdressers, manufacturers, home-based businesses and many more. With SSHEDx, a business owner can be part of the SSHED's business acceleration program without taking actual office space.
According to Craig Doyle, Manager, SSHED, growing a business, particularly a small or micro business, can be a daunting prospect for some.
'We bring in experienced advisors to help sort out problem areas in a business, and set goals and actions. It's also about making a business owner accountable as they have to regularly report back to their advisor. Put simply, SSHEDx really helps a business move forward,' he said.
To join SSHEDx, there is a one-off joining fee of $200, then it's $9.99 a day. These costs are also fully tax deductible. You can stay in the program as long as you like and simply pay as you go.
